UK gears up to celebrate Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

London, Jun 1 (EFE).- The United Kingdom was gearing up on Wednesday for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, which mark her 70 years on the throne, the country’s longest reigning monarch.

Celebrations will kick off on Thursday and over 200,000 local events and street parties are expected to take place across the UK over the four-day bank holiday.

The Queen’s Birthday Parade at Horse Guards Parade in London will be the first official event on Thursday, followed by a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday.

On Saturday, global music stars including Queen and Adam Lambert, Alicia Keys, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Andrea Bocelli, Ella Eyre, Craig David and Duran Duran will perform on a 360-degree stage around the Queen Victoria Memorial in London in which over 22,000 are expected to attend.

Sunday’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant, which is set to feature Ed Sheeran, will wrap up the weekend.

Big screens broadcasting the events will be placed across the country and over 600 Big Jubilee lunches have been planned across the Commonwealth and the rest of the world.

“For seventy years the Queen has been the ultimate symbol of what it means to be British. Her steadfast leadership and unwavering service through good and bad has been an inspiration to so many,” UK’s Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries said. EFE
