UK hits 6-month high daily coronavirus cases

London, Jul 14 (EFE).- The United Kingdom on Wednesday announced 42,302 new coronavirus cases, the highest daily figure since mid-January, official data reported.

It also reported 49 deaths.

The hospitalization rate has increased by 53.2 percent compared to a week ago, which reflects the impact of the more contagious Delta variant, the dominant in the country.

Despite the soar in cases, the government maintains its plan to lift restrictions on July 19.

As of 19 July, nightclubs are to reopen and the capacity limit imposed on theaters and cinemas will be lifted as will be the maximum number of people allowed to gather in or outdoors.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged Brits to remain “cautious”, strongly recommending the use of face masks in indoor public spaces including public transport. However, there will be no legal requirement to do so.

London mayor Sadiq Khan decided to keep masks mandatory on the capital’s transport network. Other mayors consider following in Khan’s footsteps. EFE
