London, Jun 30 (EFE).- The United Kingdom registered 26,068 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, the highest daily figure since Jan. 27, the government said Wednesday.
Another 14 people died of Covid-19, bringing the UK death toll from the pandemic to 128,140, according to the health department.
Daily cases have increased by around 70 percent in the last seven days due to the spread of the Delta variant, forcing the UK government to postpone the final phase of re-opening by four weeks.
The rate of infection stands at 157 for every 100,000 residents and new cases have topped 20,000 for the third consecutive day.
Televised images of the large crowds attending the Wimbledon Tennis tournament with little concern for social distance are alarming authorities.
More than 44.7 million people, 84.9 percent of the adult population, have already received the first dose of the vaccine against Covid-19, while 62.4 percent are fully vaccinated. EFE ptf/mp/dr
