UK reports highest daily number of Covid-19 infections in 4 months

London, Jun 22 (EFE).- Authorities in the United Kingdom detected 11,625 Covid-19 infections in the past 24 hours, the highest daily tally since mid-February, the Health Ministry said Tuesday.

The 27 fatalities reported in the same period brought the UK Covid-19 death toll to 128,008 since the pandemic began in March 2020.

Across the country 21,080 people received a first Covid-19 vaccine on Monday, while 39,325 were given a second jab.

The UK government is still set to lift all remaining lockdown restrictions by July 19, Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirmed to Sky News.

Hancock said that a team of experts is studying the possibility of allowing fully vaccinated people to travel abroad to medium-risk destinations without being required to quarantine upon returning to the UK.

The new surge in infections comes as London and Glasgow are set to host a total of eight Euro 2020 games, including the semifinals and final in Wembley Stadium, where UK authorities plan to allow 60,000 fans, exceeding 75 percent capacity. EFE
