Ukraine repels Russian attacks on Marinka in east

Kyiv, June 5 (EFE).- Ukrainian forces on Monday claimed to have repelled all Russian attacks near the eastern town of Marinka, on the outskirts of the occupied Donetsk city.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said Marinka was the new target of Russian forces in the east.

“Ukrainian defenders repelled all enemy attacks near the town of Marinka. At the same time, the enemy launched an airstrike on the city,” the Ukrainian military said.

The military report said the Russians launched artillery attacks against Marinka and two other municipalities in the vicinity.

The Russian defense ministry said last week that the “Akhmat” group of Chechen elite forces was engaged in an offensive near the town of Marinka.

The Chechens would be playing the assault troops role that the mercenaries of the Wagner group did in Bakhmut.

The Wagner group, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, and troops from Russia’s Chechen Republic have been key in Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

After declaring the capture of Bakhmut, Russia is now trying to take Marinka and Avdiivka, two towns on the outskirts of Donetsk, which is the capital of the region with the same name in eastern Ukraine. EFE
