Russian ‘possible provocations’ block humanitarian corridors in Ukraine

Lviv, Ukraine, Mar 28 (EFE).- Ukraine does not plan to open humanitarian corridors Monday due to “possible provocations” from Russia, deputy prime minister, Iryna Vereshchuk, said.

“Our intelligence has reported possible provocations by the occupants along the routes of humanitarian corridors. Therefore, for citizen security motives, no humanitarian corridors will be opened today,” Vereshchuk posted on Telegram.

Humanitarian corridors to evacuate people from cities under Russian siege, including Mariupol, Sumy and villages outside the capital Kyiv, have been set up.

But Russian shelling along evacuation routes has interrupted evacuations numerous times.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday the cities of Volnovakha, Mariupol and small towns near Kyiv no longer exist as a result of the Russian invasion.

“There is no Mariupol. Simply no. There is simply no Volnovakha. There are no towns near Kyiv in the Kyiv region,” he said in a video message.

As of Monday, a total of 143 children have been killed and 216 injured since Russia launched a full-scale invasion last month, Ukrainian parliament commissioner for human rights, Liudmyla Denisova, reported. EFE
