Kyiv, Feb 1 (EFE).- The Ukrainian military said on Thursday that it has attacked and destroyed a Russian warship in the Black Sea near the annexed Crimean Peninsula.
The “special operation”, targeting the missile ship “Ivanovets” from the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation, was conducted late on Wednesday night, Ukraine’s main military intelligence agency (GUR) said in a statement.
“As a result of multiple direct hits to the hull, the Russian ship sustained damage… and sank,” GUR added.
The attack took place while the Russian vessel was patrolling the Black Sea near the western coast of the Crimean Peninsula, which has been under Russian control since 2014 and serves as a key operating base for Russian forces in the region.
GUR released footage captured by kamikaze drones showing the strikes on the Russian vessel, estimated to have a value of up to $70 million, as per the statement.
The intelligence agency also reported that the Russian military’s “search and rescue operation” for the destroyed ship was unsuccessful.
On the same day, Russia claimed to have intercepted around 20 Ukrainian missiles over the Black Sea and the Crimean Peninsula.
According to Moscow, debris from some missiles fell on a military base near Sevastopol but did not cause damage to military hardware.EFE
