Ukraine’s hospital admissions hit daily record amid Covid denier protests

Kiev, Nov 3 (EFE).- Ukraine registered a record number of 5,935 Covid-19 hospitalizations Wednesday as hundreds of protesters gathered in the capital Kiev to protest against vaccinations.

Ukraine’s health authorities reported 23,393 new Covid-19 cases and 720 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The eastern European nation currently has the second-highest number of daily deaths in the world after neighboring Russia, according to Worldometer, a statistics site.

The soaring infection rates prompted Ukraine’s authorities to declare “red zones” in 15 of the country’s 24 regions.

Despite the severity of the pandemic in Ukraine, several hundred Covid deniers, anti-restriction and anti-vaccination protesters took to the streets of the capital Wednesday.

The demonstrators, all mask-less, voiced their opposition to new measures specifically drawn up for the unvaccinated in Ukraine, which were introduced on November 1.

They blocked the streets outside the parliament and government buildings.

Ukraine’s health minister Viktor Liashko reacted to the protest by saying it was “a mockery” and an insult to medical workers and people who lost their loved ones to Covid.

“This anti-vaccination sentiment quickly disappears in an intensive care unit,” he said at a briefing Wednesday. “Fake (vaccination) certificates do not work there. I want you to realize it.”EFE
