Dozens of flights delayed in Hong Kong due to computer failure

Beijing, Mar 16 (EFE).- A problem in the computer system at Hong Kong International Airport today caused the delay of dozens of flights of flag-carrier Cathay Pacific and the disruption of check-in and immigration services.

The airport authority said it apologized for the situation, adding that the failure occurred during regular testing and maintenance of the computer system in the early hours of Thursday and affected services at the south departures terminal..

According to the authority, delays ranged from a few minutes to an hour and affected at least 50 flights between midnight and 11am (16:00 on Wednesday and 03:00 on Thursday GMT), causing hundreds of travelers to be stranded in the departures terminal.

The agency communicated the situation to the airlines involved and guided travelers to the north departure hall, before the interrupted services gradually recovered from 08:00 local time (00:00 GMT.)

The computer systems that serve the airlines – especially Cathay Pacific – between areas A and D stopped working at about 05:00 local time (21:00 GMT on Wednesday), which led to the shift of billing services to area F, it added.

Cathay said in a statement that it expected check-in processes to take longer and urged passengers to arrive at the airport ahead of their scheduled departure time.

The problems seemed resolved at about 10:00 a.m. local time (02:00 GMT), with passengers returning to zones A-D to board. EFE
