At least six dead in Virginia Walmart shooting

Washington, Nov 23 (EFE).- At least six people have been killed in a shooting at a Walmart in the southeastern state of Virginia, United States, the Chesapeake city council reported.

“Chesapeake Police confirm 7 fatalities, including the shooter, from last night’s shooting at Walmart on Sam’s Circle,” the municipal government reported on Twitter.

The shooter, thought to be the store manager of the Walmart in the city of Chesapeake, opened fire on his coworkers while they were in a staff room after which he shot himself, according to CNN.

Police officer Leo Kosinski told CNN that the incident occurred at 10:12 p.m. local time (03:12 GMT) when the Walmart supermarket was still open.

Some 40 emergency vehicles were deployed to the site where a huge police operation was underway.

Authorities urged family members of people who were thought to be in the shop at the time and those who were in the area at the time of the shooting to go to the local convention center.

The city council has announced that a press conference will be held to report on the event at 08:00 local time.

Chesapeake, in southeastern Virginia, is a city of 250,000 and is part of the Virginia Beach and Norfolk metropolitan area.

The deadly shooting happened just four days after five people were killed in an attack on an LGBTQ+ club in Colorado where 25 others were also injured.

The shooting occurred at midnight on Saturday at Club Q which hosts regular drag performances.

The assailant, identified as Anderson Lee Aldrich, opened fire on revelers as soon as he entered the club and was subdued by at least two clubgoers, one of whom was injured.EFE
