Multiple people killed in Colorado supermarket shooting

Washington, Mar 22 (efe-epa).- Multiple people, including a police officer, were killed Monday during a shooting at a supermarket in the Colorado city of Boulder, police said.

In a press conference, Boulder Police Department Commander Kerry Yamaguchi did not provide more information on the fatalities at King Soopers grocery store as families were being notified, however local media in Colorado have reported at least six deaths.

“We do have a person of interest in custody. That person was injured during the incident, and is currently being treated for their injuries,” Yamaguchi said.

Television footage showed police officers escorting away a handcuffed shirtless man with a bloody leg.

Boulder Police tweeted that the “only known injury was to person of interest. There were fatalities, however.”

It added there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Neither Yamaguchi nor Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty, who also participated in the press conference, wanted to speculate on possible motives for the attack, nor did they say if the detainee had any kind of relationship with the supermarket or its staff.

President Joe Biden was briefed on the shooting, White House press secretary Jen Psaki tweeted.

Colorado governor, Democrat Jared Polis, published a statement in which he said his “heart is breaking” over the “senseless tragedy.”

This shooting occurs just a week after attacks on three massage parlors in the Atlanta area, Georgia, in which eight people, including six women of Asian descent, were killed. EFE-EPA
