Bomb attack kills at least 25 near Kabul school

Kabul, May 8 (EFE).- A bomb attack near a secondary school for girls in Kabul killed at least 25 people and injured 52 more on Saturday, officials confirmed.

The attack took place in a Shiite majority neighborhood in the west of the Afghan capital, an area with a large population of the persecuted Hazara ethnic minority.

Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Arian said all the victims were civilians and that the death toll was “subject to change.”

Footage shared on social media shortly after the bomb attack at 4:27 pm local time showed victims with burn injuries outside what appears to be the main entrance of the school.

The majority Shiite-practicing Hazara ethnic group are often targeted by Islamist extremists in Afghanistan.

In October, a suicide bomber killed 24 people and injured 57 outside another school in the same neighborhood.

Although no group has come forward to claim Saturday’s attack, it bears the hallmarks of the Islamic State terror organization.

Violence has surged in recent weeks in Afghanistan, especially since 1 May, the originally-agreed date between the US and the Taliban for the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country.

The US decided to push back the troop withdrawal until 11 September, meaning it will take place exactly 20 years after the 9/11 attacks that sparked the subsequent US invasion and toppling of the Taliban. EFE
