Unemployment in Japan fell to 2.9% in January

Tokyo, Mar 2 (efe-epa).- Unemployment in Japan fell by one-tenth in January compared to December to 2.9 percent, according to Tuesday government data.

The rate in December rose to 3 percent according to data reviewed by the interior and communications ministries.

Employment rose to 66.3 million in January, representing a year-on-year decrease of 500,000 people. Unemployment stood at 1.97 million, an increase of 380,000 compared to January 2020.

Jobs available for every 100 job seekers in Japan was 110 in January, six times more than in February and a higher labor supply per job seeker.

Unemployment in Japan increased since the beginning of the novel coronavirus pandemic, which has caused the destruction of numerous temporary jobs, especially in the service sector, the most affected by restrictions applied to contain the disease. EFE-EPA
