UNESCO commemorates 75th anniversary

Paris, Nov 13 (EFE).- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO on Friday commemorated its 75th anniversary at a time when its role is more critical than ever, according to UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres.

“UNESCO is born as a pillar of the United Nations system in the wake of one of the darkest chapters in human history,” Guterres said.

“At a time of great inequality, environmental crisis, polarization and the global pandemic, UNESCO’s role is more critical than ever to restore trust and solidarity, to ensure greater access to education for all, promote cultural diversity and stear technological progress for the greater good,” he added.

Over 20 heads of state participated in a ceremony in Paris at the UN organization’s headquarters near the Eiffel Tower, a heritage site, which lit up with the UNESCO logo.

UNESCO was set up in 1945 but was unable to celebrate its 75th anniversary last year because of the pandemic, so it moved its commemoration to the 41st General Conference that began this week. EFE
