Uruguay draw with Chile on own goal provoked by Luis Suarez

Sports Desk, Jun 21 (EFE).- Uruguay earned their first point of the 2021 Copa America tournament on Monday thanks to Atletico Madrid’s Luis Suarez, who forced an own goal from Chile in the second half to secure a 1-1 draw.

Eduardo Vargas put the Chileans up 1-0 in the 26th minute of the Group A match in Cuiaba, Brazil, with his 14th career goal in the Copa America and 40th for the national team.

Ben Brereton, the Anglo-Chilean who scored last week in his debut with the side of his adopted country, assisted.

Uruguay had more of the ball, but struggled to make the most of their dominance until the 66th minute, when Inter Milan man Arturo Vidal conceded an own goal while trying to prevent Suarez from redirecting a pass from Matias Vecino.

To make matter worse, Vidal injured himself on the play.

The outcome leaves Chile first in Group A with 5 points from three matches, 1 more than Argentina, who are in action Monday night against third-place Paraguay.

Uruguay are fourth and Bolivia sit at the bottom of the group with no points. EFE sd/dr
