Presumed human remains found in recovered Titan debris

Washington, June 28 (EFE).- Presumed human remains have been found among the debris of the Titanic submersible that imploded on a dive to the wreckage of the Titanic with five people on board, the United States Coast Guard reported Wednesday.

The Coast Guard received debris and evidence recovered from the sea floor off the Canadian Horizon Arctic vessel that arrived in St. John’s, Newfoundland, on Wednesday. It will be transported to the US for further analysis and testing.

“United States medical professionals will conduct a formal analysis of presumed human remains that have been carefully recovered within the wreckage at the site of the incident,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The US opened a high-level probe, known as a Marine Board of Investigation (MBI), on Sunday to look into the accident.

Large pieces of metal resembling parts of the Titan’s hull and twisted cables were brought ashore. The debris recovery and analysis is a key part of the MBI to determine what led up to the implosion.

MBI Chair Captain Jason Neubauer said in the statement that the “evidence will provide investigators from several international jurisdictions with critical insights into the cause of this tragedy.”

“There is still a substantial amount of work to be done to understand the factors that led to the catastrophic loss of the Titan and help ensure a similar tragedy does not occur again.”

According to US authorities, vessel Polar Prince lost contact with the Titan on Sunday, June 18, 105 minutes after it had started its dive down to the Titanic.

The accident caused the death of millionaire Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, a 19-year-old student; British explorer Hamish Harding; French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet and the CEO of the submersible’s firm OceanGate, Stockton Rush. EFE
