Maduro calls China the ‘biggest force of development’ in Latin America

Beijing, Sep 14 (EFE).- Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro said Thursday that China’s economic and investment policy was the “biggest force of development” in Latin America.

“What would become of Latin America and the Caribbean if China and its companies had not arrived with their investments (…). We would be in the Middle Ages,” Maduro said at a press conference in Beijing at the end of his nearly week-long visit to the Asian country.

Maduro said that despite having become an “economic superpower,” China was neither “imperialist nor colonialist,” unlike other countries.

The Venezuelan president, who concludes his official visit in Beijing on Thursday, said that the agreement reached with China further strengthens the “powerful and solid” relationship between both countries.

“We had never achieved a document of the depth, strategic importance and consensus of this one, which contains 30 items on all China-Venezuela relations,” Maduro said.

He also thanked China for its defense against what he described as “abusive” economic sanctions imposed on his country and said that Venezuela would continue to denounce the “economic and trading persecution” within the framework of the UN.

Before arriving in Beijing, the Venezuelan president also traveled to the cities of Shenzhen and Shanghai, as well as the eastern Shandong province.

Maduro’s China visit comes in the backdrop of historic strong ties between the two countries stretching back many decades, especially since the tenure of former Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez (1999-2013). EFE
