US critics push Nomadland as Oscar favorite

Los Angeles, USA, Dec 21 (efe-epa).- With more than four months to go for the Academy Awards, critics in the United States have championed the case of “Nomadland” as a favorite for the golden statuette.

Nomadland won the award for best film of 2020 from the Boston Society of Film Critics (BSFC) and the Chicago Film Critics Association (CFCA).

The film was also a finalist for best picture decided by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA), losing out to “Small Axe”, a television series of five films directed by Steve McQueen that will be able to compete in the Emmys but not at the Academy Awards..

Nomadland also stands a good chance for bagging the best director award as the Chinese filmmaker Chloe Zhao won in that category at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards as well as those in Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago.

These awards are the latest addition to the accolades received by Nomadland, which gained recognition at international film festivals, winning the Golden Lion at the Mostra in Venice and the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Another name that is likely to be remembered at this edition’s Academy Awards is Chadwick Boseman, the star of “Black Panther” (2018), who died in August at age 43 due to cancer.

Boseman was posthumously awarded the best actor by the film critics in Los Angeles and Chicago for his role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, his last film.

He was also given the best supporting actor award by the critics in New York for the same film.

Among the female leads, Sidney Flanigan has bagged the best actress awards from critics in New York and Boston for “Never Rarely Sometimes Always”.

Apart from these, the situation is a little more more uncertain with many films and artists contending for top awards across different categories.

For instance, “First Cow” took the award for Best Picture at the NYFCC, which recognized Delroy Lindo as best actor for “Da 5 Bloods”.

Carey Mulligan won the award for Best Actress at LAFCA for her role in “Promising Young Woman”.

The critics as Boston gave the best actor award to a veteran like Anthony Hopkins for his role in “The Father”.

The Chicago Film Critics Association decided on Frances McDormand as the best actress for Nomadland.

The 93rd edition of the Academy Awards will be held on Apr. 25, 2021, which – like the rest of the Hollywood awards – have been delayed to adapt to the current pandemic situation that has kept movie theaters closed for months.

In this context, this year the Oscars will also consider films that have only been released on online platforms. EFE-EPA
