St. Jude Employees Marry Years After Meeting As Patients

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/WMC) — Para bien o para mal, esos votos matrimoniales tienen un significado personal para los recién casados ​​Joel y Lindsey Alsup.

La pareja se conoció cuando ambos eran pacientes en el Hospital de Investigación Infantil St. Jude en la década de 1990. Joel fue diagnosticado con cáncer de huesos y Lindsey con Leucemia linfoblástica aguda.

“Mis padres comenzaron a notar que, siendo un niño diestro, dejé de usar mi mano derecha para hacer ciertas cosas”, dijo Joel. “Cosas simples como abrochar mi cinturón de seguridad o tirarle una pelota a mi papá”.

Lindsey describió los momentos en que sus padres sabían que algo andaba mal.

“Perdí todo deseo de comer, tenía moretones al menor contacto y mi madre siguió teniendo la intuición de que algo estaba realmente mal. Como madre se sentía algo incómoda, sentía que algo pasaba con su hija”, dijo.

A la edad de 7 años, Joel se sometió a quimioterapia y finalmente le amputaron el brazo derecho.

Lindsey se sometió a quimioterapia a los 10 años de edad.

La rara experiencia encendió una amistad única.

“Tuve el privilegio de crecer con este hombre que me inspiró, que realmente me desafió y realmente me ayudó en mi formación a medida que iba creciendo como una sobreviviente de cáncer infantil”, dijo Lindsey.

El dúo terminó yéndose por caminos separados y perdieron el contacto. Años más tarde, ambos volvieron al hospital que les salvó la vida. Esta vez, no fueron pacientes sino empleados.

Su amistad se reavivó cuando Lindsey aceptó un trabajo en ALSAC en el 2004. En su primer día, Lindsey conoció a muchas personas, incluidos antiguos pacientes, uno de ellos era Joel. El resto es historia.

“He sido muy, muy afortunado, durante los últimos dos años y medio de mi vida, ya que ella ha sido una parte increíble en mi vida, la parte más importante de mi vida, y ahora, desde hace dos semanas y media, ella es mi esposa”, dijo Joel.

Lindsey y Joel se casaron el 1 de septiembre, mejor conocido por los residentes de Memphis como el “Día 901”. La fecha se hizo especial porque era el comienzo del Mes de Concientización sobre el Cáncer Infantil.

La ceremonia se llevó a cabo en el pabellón de Danny Thomas/ALSAC, que tiene la con cúpula dorada. Tanto el lugar de celebración como la gente, tenían detalles de St. Jude.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) — For better or for worse–those vows have a personal meaning for newlyweds Joel and Lindsey Alsup.

The couple met as patients at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the 1990s. Joel was diagnosed with bone cancer and Lindsey with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

“My parents started noticing as a right-handed child, I stopped using my right hand to do certain things,” Joel said. “Simple things like buckling my seat belt or throwing a ball back to my dad.”

Lindsey described the moments her parents knew something was different.

“I lost all desire to eat, I was bruising at the slightest touch, and my mom just continued to have that mother’s intuition feeling uneasy that something’s really wrong with my daughter,” she said.

At the age of 7, Joel underwent chemotherapy and ultimately had his right arm amputated.

Lindsey underwent chemotherapy at 10.

The rare experience sparked a unique friendship.

“I had the privilege of growing up with this man who inspired me, who really challenged me and really helped shape me as I continued to grow up as a childhood cancer survivor,” Lindsey said.

The duo ended up going their separate ways and losing touch. Years later, both made their way back to the hospital that saved their lives. This time, they were not patients but employees.

Their friendship was rekindled when Lindsey accepted a job at ALSAC in 2004. On her first day Lindsey was introduced to many people, including former patients–one being Joel. The rest is history.

“I’ve just been very, very fortunate for the last 2-and-a-half years of my life that she’s been an incredible part of my life–the most important part of my life, and now for 2-and-a-half weeks, she’s been my wife,” Joel said.

Lindsey and Joel tied the knot on Sept. 1, better known to Memphians as “901 Day.” The date was made extra special because it was the start of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

The ceremony was held at the gold-domed Danny Thomas/ALSAC pavilion, and from the venue to the people, there were touches of St. Jude everywhere.
