Vaccine bookings rise as Covid pass becomes obligatory for workers in Italy

Rome, Sep 19 (EFE).- Vaccine appointments in Italy have surged after the European country decided to impose an obligation on private and public sector employees to show evidence of a Covid-19 vaccination or negative test results.

Francesco Figliuolo, Italy’s emergency coronavirus commissioner, told local media Sunday that the effect of the Covid-19 measure was seen on vaccine bookings, which rose by 35% on Friday in comparison to the previous days.

On Thursday, the government of Italian prime minister Mario Draghi approved the new law extending the country’s existing health pass to cover all employees, meaning those who fail to provide a certificate will no longer be allowed to go to work starting October 15.

The new rules affect 23 million workers in Italy’s labor force.

In Italy, 75% of people over the age of 12 (40.9 million people) have been fully inoculated.

Since the onset of the pandemic, some 4.6 million coronavirus infections and 130,284 related deaths have been registered in Italy, one of the European countries hardest hit by Covid-19.EFE
