Kubo becomes 1st Japanese player to join Real Sociedad

San Sebastian, Spain, Jul 19 (EFE).- Takefusa Kubo on Tuesday became the first Japanese player ever to join Real Sociedad on a long-term deal.

The forward extended his Spanish adventure, on which he first embarked in 2019 when he joined Real Madrid on a transfer from FC Tokyo.

Although he did not make a single appearance with the Merengue, Kubo played for Mallorca, Villarreal and Getafe on loan before signing for the San Sebastian team that ended last season sixth.

“Hey everyone, I am thrilled to be able to be here, getting my new stage started,” the 21-year-old, clad in the Real Sociedad shirt, said in a video posted on the club’s Twitter account.

Real Sociedad on Monday created a new official Twitter account in Japanese, which joins those it already has in Spanish, Basque, French and English.

Through the new account, the LaLiga club on Tuesday shared a video presenting Kubo as “our new txuri urdin warrior”, along with images of a Japanese fighter with a covered face and armed with a katana.

At the age of 10, Kubo joined the Barcelona youth academy for four years until 2015, when he moved for FC Tokyo, which allowed him to make his professional debut in 2017.

A year later, he was loaned to Yokohama F. Marinos, before signing for Real Madrid during the 2019 summer transfer window. EFE
