US Treasury Secretary arrives in China to ease tensions

Beijing, Jul 6 (EFE).- United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen arrived in China Thursday on a four-day visit with the aim of straightening out trade relations between the two global powers, according to Chinese state media reports.

The visit will include meetings with high-ranking officials of the Chinese government, and conclude on Jul. 9.

The Treasury Secretary will seek to work on collaboration “on global challenges,” and could also address the problems in microchip trade between the two nations.

However, several Chinese analysts raised doubts about Yellen’s visit over the official’s emphasis on the national security of the US and its partners.

Yellen’s trip, which comes two weeks after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Beijing, is yet another attempt to ease tensions between the two powers, the Treasury Department said in a statement.

The treasury department, in a message in April, had underlined the economic priorities regarding its relationship would include securing national security interests, fostering mutually beneficial growth, and cooperating on global challenges such as the climate crisis and over-indebtedness.

The trip is part of the Joe Biden administration’s efforts to improve communication with the Chinese government and prevent competition between the two countries from leading to open conflict. EFE
