US wins most gold medals at Tokyo 2020

Tokyo, Aug 8 (EFE).- The United States on Sunday emerged as last-minute victors at the Tokyo 2020 Games with 39 gold medals, just one ahead of China, which had held the top spot heading into the final day of competitions.

On Sunday, the US women’s basketball claimed their 7th straight gold medal as they defeated Japan 90-75, while the women’s volleyball team earned their maiden gold medal at Brazil’s expense.

Jennifer Valente, meanwhile, won the gold medal in women’s omnium cycling to add to the US haul.

Japan completed the top three with 27 gold medals after a strong showing from the hosts.

On the final day of the competition, Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge defended his Olympic marathon title with a time of two hours, eight minutes and 38 seconds ahead of Dutch Abdi Nageeye (2h09:58) and Belgian Bashir Abdi (2h10:00). EFE
