Malcom’s extra-time goal fires Brazil to gold medal

Yokohama, Japan, Aug 7 (EFE).- Malcom scored an extra-time goal on Saturday to secure the gold medal in the men’s soccer for Brazil at Tokyo 2020 with a 2-1 win over Spain.

Brazil took the lead in the first-half stoppage time when Matheus Cunha fired home, punishing the Spanish defense for their failure to clear a high ball from Dani Alves.

One hour into the game, however, a flying Mikel Oyarzabal connected with a Carlos Soler cross, bringing his team level with a brilliant volley at the back post.

Spain pressed for a winner, and hit the crossbar twice, but they could not find the decisive goal.

Malcom, who came on at the start of extra time, scored the winner in the 108th minute, when he outran Jesús Vallejo, who had also joined the action as a substitute in the 90th minute, and struck a left-foot finish to settle the match.

Brazil claimed its second gold medal in a row, while Spain had to settle for a third silver medal following their runner up finish at Sydney 2000 and Antwerp 1920. EFE
