Taliban says ban on UN female workers in Afghanistan an ‘internal issue’

Kabul, April 12 (EFE).- The Taliban government in Afghanistan said Wednesday that the ban on female employees of the United Nations in the country was an “internal issue” following criticism from the agency and the international community.

Moreover, the fundamentalists stressed that the ban did not mean there was any form of discrimination, and should “be respected” by all relevant parties.

“This issue is an internal issue of Afghanistan which doesn’t create problems for anyone and should be respected by all sides,” Taliban’s chief spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Tuesday reiterated its condemnation of last week’s ban on UN female workers and instructed their workers to work from home.

UNAMA added that any negative consequences of this crisis for the Afghan people would be the responsibility of the de facto authorities.

In response, the Taliban government said that this move did not mean there was “discrimination or creating (of) obstacles to the functioning of the UN. On the contrary (…) we are committed to all rights of our people.”

Since their return to power in August 2021, the Taliban have imposed a series of restrictions on women, including a compulsory veil in public, the need for accompanied by a male relative for long journeys and restrictions on work and education, among others. EFE
