Venezuela hold Colombia 0-0 on great performance by keeper Fariñez

Goiania, Brazil, Jun 17 (EFE).- Venezuela stymied a talented Colombia side 0-0 here Thursday to pick up their first point of the 2021 Copa America tournament thanks to a brilliant display by goalkeeper Wuilker Fariñez.

The result brings Colombia to 4 points from two matches, enough to lead Group B by a point over host nation Brazil, but the Canarihna can vault over the Cafeteros with a win later Thursday against Peru.

While Venezuela can feel pretty good about sitting third in the group after being thrashed 3-0 by Brazil in the opener.

The Colombians had 65 percent possession and a 23-2 advantage on shots, but the 23-year-old who plays his club soccer for Ligue 1 club Lens made half-a-dozen notable stops.

Decimated by Covid-19, the Venezuelans made a tentative start that only emboldened a Colombian team including attackers the caliber of Juventus man Juan Cuadrado and Atalanta’s Duvan Zapata.

The contest grew increasingly rough and Colombia’s frustration boiled over in stoppage time with a harsh tackle by Luis Diaz that saw him sent off with a straight red card. EFE sd-jga/dr
