Griezmann picks up thigh injury, casting doubt on remaining league games

Barcelona, Spain, Jul 12 (efe-epa).- Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann has sustained a muscle injury and will likely be in doubt for the remaining two games of the league season as the Catalan side hang on to the title race by the skin of their teeth.

In a statement, the club said that tests revealed the Frenchman had an injury to the quadriceps in his right leg, although did not specify how long he could be sidelined.

“He is therefore not available for selection at the present time and the evolution of the injury will condition his availability,” Barcelona said in a statement.

Griezmann played the first half of Barça’s 0-1 away win against Valladolid on Saturday but was replaced at half-time by Luis Suárez.

Barcelona are a point behind first-place Real Madrid in LaLiga with two match days to go in until the end of the season, which was rescheduled to clear a backlog of games following the untimely break forced by the coronavirus pandemic.

Real Madrid have won every game since coming back from the break, while Barcelona dropped points with draws against Sevilla, Celta de Vigo and Atlético de Madrid and slipped from first-place.

The team from the Spanish capital also has a game in hand, giving them room for error that Barcelona cannot afford if they want to stay in with a chance of taking the title.

The remaining games for Barcelona involve a tie against Osasuna at the Camp Nou and an away trip to Alavés.

Real Madrid on the other hand head to Granada on Monday, followed by fixtures at home with Villareal and a final game at Leganes, who are on the cusp of relegation.
