Venice Art Biennale opens to the public with Ukraine as protagonist
Venice, Italy, Apr 23 (EFE).- The Venice Art Biennale on Saturday opened its doors to the public with Ukraine in the spotlight as the country managed to exhibit its work despite the Russian invasion.
The 59th edition of the international fair, which runs till November 27, returns after a one-year hiatus during the pandemic and is showcasing its largest female representation ever, with some 90% of over 200 artists taking part being women.
Russia has been excluded from the event over its invasion of Ukraine, although artists who oppose the regime of Russian president Vladimir Putin are welcomed by organizers.
In the middle of the Venetian Gardens, where the Russian pavilion is located, Ukraine has installed a square with sandbags simulating those used in conflicts for protection from bombs and writings denouncing the horrors of war.
The organizers of the Biennale, one of the most renowned artistic events in the world, have helped the Ukrainian artist Pavlo Makov to present his installation “The Fountain of Exhaustion. Acqua alta.”
Thos year’s showcase is titled the Milk of Dreams after Leonora Carrington’s book of the same name, a surrealist story of a magical world where characters transform and change.EFE
