Kyrgios into 1st ever Grand Slam semifinal with straight sets win over Garin

London, Jul 6 (EFE).- Nick Kyrgios on Wednesday defeated Cristian Garín in straight sets in the last 8 at Wimbledon to reach his first-ever Grand Slam semifinal.

Kyrgios needed two hours and 13 minutes to end the Chilean’s best-ever Grand Slam run 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 and become the first Australian semifinalist at Wimbledon since Lleyton Hewitt in 2005.

“An amazing atmosphere out here again. I just never thought that I would be in the semi-finals at a Grand Slam. I thought that ship had sailed,” the 27-year-old said afterwards.

“I didn’t go about things great earlier in my career and may have missed my window. I am really proud of the way I have come back out here,” he added.

Garín squandered a 3-2 lead in the first set but Kyrgios broke back in the sixth game and once again in the 10th as the Australian took the opening frame.

In the second, it was the Australian who drew first blood, breaking Garín’s serve to love for a 3-1 decisive lead as he fended off three break points to double his advantage.

Both players held serve throughout the third set, in which Kyrgios shrugged off three break points, forcing a tie-break that the Australian won 7-5.

The 40th-ranked player will take on either Rafael Nadal or Taylor Fritz hoping to extend his best ever Grand Slam run. EFE
