Verstappen on pole for Austrian GP after winning sprint race

Sports Desk, Jul 9 (EFE).- Red Bull’s Max Verstappen will start the Austrian Grand Prix on pole after winning the Qualifying Sprint Race at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg on Saturday.

The reigning world champion and leader in the drivers’ championship, who started in first, finished ahead of Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.

George Russell will start in fourth, one place ahead of Sergio Perez in the other Red Bull who had started in 13th.

Alpine’s Esteban Ocon was sixth, but his teammate Fernando Alonso will start from 19th on Sunday after his car failed to start.

It was a strong showing from Haas pair seventh-placed Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher, who had a close fight with Mercedes’ seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who will start in eighth.

After holding him off for several laps, Schumacher dropped behind Hamilton and will begin Sunday’s race in ninth position.

Valtteri Bottas finished in 10th but will start from the last row after changing power unit, allowing Lando Norris of McLaren into the top 10. EFE
