Deputy Who Shot, Killed Jarveon Hudspeth Will Not Be Charged, District Attorney Says

SHELBY COUNTY, TN (FOX 13 News) — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputy who shot and killed Jarveon Hudspeth will not face criminal charges, according to Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy.
Mulroy made the announcement during a press conference on Tuesday, October 17, nearly four months after the 21-year-old died.
Video of the deadly encounter released by D.A. Mulroy’s office on August 24 showed Hudspeth being pulled over. During the traffic stop, Hudspeth informs the deputy that he does have his gun in the car and then exits the vehicle.
The deputy can be heard informing Hudspeth that he needs to search Hudspeth’s car at which point the 21-year-old begins walking back towards the driver’s side door.
“Don’t get back in the vehicle,” the deputy says as Hudspeth sits down in the driver’s seat.
A struggle then ensued and the car could be heard accelerating as the deputy jumps into the car while it speeds off.
Before the deputy fell from the car while it was driving, he fired at least one shot which killed Hudspeth. The deputy suffered critical injuries from falling out of the car.
Attorney Ben Crump, who represents the family of Hudspeth, called the officer’s actions “reckless”.
“Two whole months after the tragic shooting that took the life of Jarveon Hudspeth, the public is finally seeing video of the unnecessary and senseless actions by law enforcement that led to his death,” Crump’s said after video of the deadly encouter was released. “From the initial stop to the shot that killed Jarveon, every single choice made by this officer was reckless, and ultimately, deadly. The video clearly shows that the officer voluntarily climbed into the vehicle, potentially putting himself into harm’s way. And for what? Jarveon’s mother was informed by officials that the officer ran his license and registration, which came back clean. To this day –– more than 60 days later –– we do not know the initial reason for this deadly stop. Enough with the secrecy. Enough with the evasion. Enough with the silence. This family, and this community, deserve answers.”
