Verstappen to start British Grand Prix from pole

Sports Desk, Jul 8 (EFE).- Defending two-time Formula One champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull) finished first Saturday in qualifying for the Grand Prix of Great Britain at the Silverstone Circuit.

The Dutchman bested the McLaren duo of Briton Lando Norris and Australia’s Oscar Piastri to grab pole position for the fifth straight time.

The next four spots were claimed by Ferrari and Mercedes.

Monaco’s Charles Leclerc will join Piastri on the second row while Spanish teammate Carlos Sainz will share the third row with Briton George Russell.

The other half of the Mercedes pair, British seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton will begin Sunday’s race from P7, alongside Thai racer Alex Albon (Williams).

Spaniard Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), with two F1 titles, was the ninth-fastest on Saturday, followed by Frenchman Pierre Gasly (Alpine).

Mexico’s Sergio “Checo” Perez (Red Bull), failed to reach Q3 for the fifth consecutive round, but after his performance last week in Austria, where he finished third after starting from P15, the team will likely not be too worried.

Verstappen, winner in seven of the first nine races this season, leads the driver standings with 229 points, followed by Perez (148), Alonso (131), Hamilton (106), and Sainz (82).
