Verstappen wins Austrian GP, Hamilton fourth

Spielberg, Austria, Jul 4 (EFE).- Red Bull driver Max Verstappen on Sunday won Formula One Austrian Grand Prix, marking his 15th career victory and fifth of the season.

The 23-year-old Dutch extended his lead at the top of the F1 world championship over Lewis Hamilton, who took fourth with some 46 seconds behind after suffering damage to the rear of his car.

“Today was incredible, to be honest, the car was on rails!” Verstappen said after the race.

“It was really enjoyable to drive. You go into the weekend as the favorite, but it’s never easy to do.

“It was insane to see all the fans and so much orange!”

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas came second with 17.9 seconds behind, while Lando Norris of McLaren took third to complete the podium.

Spaniard Carlos Sainz of Ferrari finished fifth, ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

Daniel Ricciardo of McLaren, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, Pierre Gasly of Alphatauri Honda and Fernando Alonso of Alpine Renault completed the top 10.

The win at the Red Bull circuit brings Verstappen tally to 182 atop of the Formula One overall standing, 32 ahead of second-placed four-time defending champion Hamilton who extended his Mercedes contract throughout 2023.EFE
