Putin thanks Russian military for victory in Luhansk

Moscow, Jul 4 (EFE).- Russia’s president Vladimir Putin on Monday thanked his military and pro-Russian militias for taking full control of the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk, which Moscow recognizes as an independent state.

Putin’s remarks came during a televised meeting with the Russian defense minister, Sergei Shoigu, following the weekend capture of the eastern city of Lysychansk.

Military “units that took part in active hostilities and achieved success, victory, in Lugansk, should certainly rest and increase their combat capabilities,” Putin said.

During the meeting, Shoigu told Putin that the offensive that resulted in seizing Severodonetsk, Lysychansk and 22 other towns left 2,221 fatalities.

“At the moment, Lysychansk is being demined, and the civilian population is being provided with humanitarian aid and medical assistance,” the minister said. EFE
