Stoltenberg warns war in Ukraine could last for years

International Desk, Jun 19 (EFE).- The war in Ukraine could last for years, Nato’s secretary general Jens Stoltenberg warned Sunday.

“We must prepare for the fact that it could take years. We must not let up in supporting Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said in an interview with German newspaper Bild.

The Nato chief said that although the costs of war were high, referring to rising food and energy prices, the cost of letting Russia win the war would be even higher.

He added that although much of the eastern Donbas region was now in control of Russia, supplying Ukraine with more modern weaponry would increase Kyiv’s chances of winning.

Asked about the possibility of a nuclear war, Stoltenberg said that the risk hadn’t increased but that the Kremlin’s threats were “dangerous”.

British prime minister Boris Johnson also warned on Saturday that the world would have to prepare for a long war.

“I am afraid that we need to steel ourselves for a long war,” he wrote in the Sunday Times. EFE
