Hispanic Voices at the University of Memphis: It Is Difficult but Not Impossible

Gran parte de la comunidad hispana no tiene conocimiento de los recursos que existen para estudiantes indocumentados. Muchas veces esto impide que los estudiantes continúen con sus estudios universitarios. Sin embargo, sí existen varias oportunidades y organizaciones que les pueden ayudar a obtener el dinero para alcanzar sus metas de ir a la universidad. Hoy les queremos informar sobre tres oportunidades que existen en el estado de Tennessee para los estudiantes indocumentados: Christian Brothers University, una universidad privada en Memphis, TN; una página de internet llamada Simple Tuition.com y algunas universidades estatales que dan la colegiatura a los estudiantes indocumentados al mismo precio que a los estudiantes legales.
Christian Brothers University tiene un programa diseñado para ayudar a los estudiantes indocumentados a obtener recursos financieros. Este programa da becas privadas y préstamos para ayudarles a pagar sus estudios. Los estudiantes indocumentados tienen que mantener un cierto puntaje para poder conservar su ayuda financiera. Fue creado para proveer a estos estudiantes la oportunidad de asistir a la universidad y continuar con sus estudios.
La página de internet llamada Simple Tuition es un sitio que tiene una lista de varias becas en su página. Los estudiantes y sus padres pueden encontrar las becas que necesiten, ya sean becas basadas en la carrera que quieran estudiar, becas del estado en donde están viviendo o becas para estudiantes indocumentados.
Los estudiantes indocumentados necesitan ser conscientes de que mientras en Tennessee no está permitido que paguen la matrícula estatal, hay 18 estados que sí lo permiten. Estos estados incluyen California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nuevo México, New York, Oregón, Texas, Utah, y Washington. Estos estados permiten la matrícula estatal debido a la legislación estatal. Oklahoma y Rhode Island lo permiten por la decisión de Board of Regents.
En conclusión, sí hay oportunidades para los estudiantes indocumentados. Si una cosa no funciona, otra cosa sí funcionará. Sigan luchando por sus sueños y nunca se den por vencidos.

A lot of the Hispanic community is unaware of the resources available for undocumented students. Often this has been an issue with allowing them to continue with their university studies. However, there are a lot of opportunities and organizations that are willing to help them obtain money to continue with their goals of going to college. We would like to inform you about three of the main important opportunities that are available here in the state of Tennessee for undocumented students. Christian Brothers University, a university in Memphis, Tennessee; a website called Simple Tuition, and universities that give in-state tuition to undocumented students.
Christian Brothers is a private university in Memphis, Tennessee, that has committed to help undocumented students obtain money to continue their university studies. CBU provides financial support to students who rely on financial aid but aren’t eligible to obtain any. This support includes both private scholarships and loans. This program is designed to provide an equal opportunity to these students to be able to go to college and have better opportunities in life.
Simple Tuition is a website that has a great list of scholarships for undocumented students. On this website, you can find what scholarships you need: scholarships based on the career you are going to study, scholarships from the state that you live in, and, most importantly, scholarships for undocumented students.
Students need to be aware that while Tennessee currently does not allow in-state tuition to undocumented students, there are other states that do. Currently there are 18 states that allow in-state tuition for undocumented students. Sixteen states such as: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington extend in-state tuition to undocumented students through state legislation. Oklahoma and Rhode Island allow in-state tuition rates to undocumented students through Board of Regents decisions.
In conclusion, there are existing opportunities for undocumented students and they shouldn’t give up on their dreams. If one thing doesn’t work, another one will. Keep pursuing your dreams and never give up.
