Volunteers Work to Improve Lighting, Safety

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) — Jaylan Sutton, a sophomore at Douglas High School spent his Friday night reporting broken street lamps.

“I mean, I’m helping the community get better and helping people unite with each other,” said Sutton.

Sutton and other students from Kingsbury High and Collegiate Middle helped with The Heights Community Development Corporation’s Light up the Night project.

The CDC’s focus is to spruce up the streets.

“There is often a complaint that the neighborhood is too dark at night,” said Community Coordinator Christina Crutchfield.

They have already improved public greenspaces and made a pedestrian and bike path more user-friendly.

Their biggest challenge is creating quality, affordable housing.

“We have over 1,100 blighted and abandoned houses in this neighborhood,” said Executive Director Jared Myers.

Myers is not originally from The Heights, but he is a dedicated stakeholder now.

“My wife and I decided we were going to plant our family here, move into the neighborhood and now we’re helping revitalize housing in the neighborhood,” said Myers.

Part of Friday’s mission was installing solar lights along the trail next to Treadwell Middle School.

“Hopefully to attract more residents and lift up the residents who are here to be a part of this,” said

The Heights CDC motto is, “we rise by lifting others.”

It is a relatively young organization but they have already improved 10 homes with a goal of 30 homes by 2020.
