Palestinian shot dead as clashes erupt during Israeli raid

Jerusalem, Sep 5 (EFE).- A young Palestinian man was killed on Tuesday after clashes erupted during an Israeli raid in the northern West Bank, Palestinian authorities said.

The Palestinian National Authority’s Health Ministry said Ayed Samih Khaled Abu Harb, 21, “was shot by live occupation (Israeli) bullets fired to the head” in the Nur Shams refugee camp in Tulkarem, a town that straddles Israel’s northern border.

Another Palestinian was seriously wounded, Palestinian news agency Wafa reported.

Israel’s military confirmed it had conducted a counterterrorism operation in the Nur Shams camp.

According to an Israeli army statement, Israel Defense Forces and Israel Border Police Forces targeted a building that contained several ready-to-use explosive devices and served as a headquarters for wanted suspects in the Nur Shams Camp.

Local militiamen scorched tires and hurled explosives at Israeli forces and there was an exchange of fire with several suspects, an Israeli army spokesman said.

Israeli forces supported by two military bulldozers stormed the Nur Shams camp at dawn.

According to Wafa, Israel’s military deployed rooftop snipers, destroyed the main street of the refugee camp and raided several houses.

Several other raids across the West Bank also led to heavy clashes and resulted in the arrest of 21 Palestinians and the confiscation of weapons.

Tuesday’s raids come amid a prolonged spiral of violence in the area, which is experiencing its bloodiest year since the Second Intifada Palestinian uprising (2000-2005). EFE
