Germany warns of fourth Covid wave if vaccinations do not increase

Berlin, Sep 8 (EFE).- Health authorities in Germany on Wednesday urged as many citizens as possible to get vaccinated, warning the country could be heading for a fourth Covid-19 wave in October unless inoculation rates pick up.

Lothar Wieler, head of the country’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) disease control center, said that vaccination numbers must go up in order to avoid an “extreme” surge in new infections, saying vaccines are “our opportunity to end the pandemic.”

In a joint press conference, health minister Jens Spahn said that at least 66% of the German population have received the first vaccine shot, and 61.6% have already been fully inoculated.

“Right now, there is a pandemic of the unvaccinated,” Spahn said, calling on citizens to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Germany has surpassed the 4-million mark for total coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with 4.02 million cases reported so far. The Covid-19-linked death toll stands at 92,949.EFE
