Sergio Ramos joins Paris Saint-Germain

Paris, Jul 8 (EFE).- Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday confirmed the signing of veteran Spanish defender Sergio Ramos on a two-season deal.

Ramos’ arrives on a free transfer after his contract at Real Madrid expired at the end of last season.

The former Madrid captain is set to sign for two seasons, amending PSG’s original offer of one season with an option of an additional season.

The two-year contract was confirmed after the defender, who underwent surgery on his left knee in February, passed a medical examination on Wednesday in Paris.

His injuries in the last few months have been a major hurdle for Ramos, preventing him from playing the last stretch of the LaLiga season and ending his chances of joining the Spanish squad for the Euro 2020.

Ramos’ signing means Mauricio Pochettino can count on three center-backs, along with Marquinhos and Presnel Kimpembe.

The veteran can also play at right back, or even as a defensive midfielder.

“The best place to keep on dreaming, the best club to keep on winning. We’re going to fight with everything we have for everything. Allez!”, Ramos said in a post on Twitter.

In a statement, the club said they had signed “a complete footballer, one of the best defenders in the history of the game. He is a born competitor, a leader and a true professional.

“His vast experience and ambition is in perfect synergy with those of the club.”

At 35 years old, the Spanish star is not the first senior player to be offered a spot at PSG, with others before him like Daniel Alves at 34, David Beckham at 37 or Gianluigi Buffon at 40 years old paving the way.

PSG will also sign Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who like Ramos had become a free agent after his contract with AC Milan expired.

Donnarumma, who played a starring role in the Euro 2020 Italy v Spain semi final on Tuesday, will join the Parisian team until 2026.

Full-back Achraf Hakimi also agreed this week to join PSG until 2026, in a deal that will cost the Parisian club an initial 60 million euros and up to 10m in add-ons. EFE
