Israel attacks Hezbollah’s military infrastructure in Lebanon

Jerusalem, Oct 17 (EFE).- The Israeli military began attacking Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on Tuesday in retaliation for the previous day’s attacks by the Shiite group.

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that it hit Hezbollah’s military infrastructure in the neighboring country early Tuesday, without offering more details.

On Monday, Hezbollah announced that it had hit an Israeli tank with a missile launch and targeted at least five areas of northern Israel.

The IDF responded to the attacks with artillery fire.

The Israeli military said that no soldiers had been injured in the attacks despite Hezbollah’s claims of casualties.

IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari warned that the Lebanese terror group would face a deadly response if it continued to carry out attacks with rockets and missiles from the border.

Israel and Hezbollah have been exchanging fire for 10 days in the worst escalation of violence at the Lebanese-Israeli border since 2006.

On Monday, Israel ordered the evacuation of 28 communities less than two kilometers (1.24 miles) from the border with Lebanon, where 27,000 people live.

Israel said Hezbollah was acting on Iran’s orders to increase pressure on the country in order to distract it from the war against Hamas.

“Don’t do it,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Iran and its main ally, Hezbollah, on Monday, raising the possibility of the opening of a new war front.

The fight between Israel and Lebanese groups has left a total of 17 dead — five in Israel, including four soldiers and one civilian — and at least 12 in Lebanon, including three civilians.

The civilian causalty in Lebanon includes a cameraman for the Reuters agency, while four members of Hezbollah and five members of Palestinian militias are reported to have been killed. EFE
