Elton John wows at the White House

Washington, Sep 23 (EFE).- British singer-songwriter Elton John performed at the White House in front of US President Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden and 2,000 guests on Friday as part of his farewell tour.

The veteran musician played in a huge open-air tent on the South Lawn of the presidential residence at a concert called “A Night When Hope and History Rhyme.”

The event was held in honor of “everyday history-makers” such as teachers, nurses, frontline workers, mental health advocates, students, and LGBTQ+ activists.

“It’s wonderful to be here amongst so many people who have helped my AIDS foundation and my heroes, that ones that work day to day on the front line,” he told the crowd.

In his iconic rose-tinted glasses, the 75-year-old performed some of his biggest hits such as “Your Song,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Rocketman,” “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” “Crocodile Rock” and “I’m Still Standing.”

In addition to John’s songs, there were also brief speeches by the Bidens and some of the guests.

At the end of the night, Biden surprised the British songwriter with the US National Humanities Medal.

“I’m flabbergasted,” John said. “I will treasure this.”

The last time John performed at the White House was in 1998, when Democrat Bill Clinton was president. He declined to play for former president Donald Trump’s inauguration. EFE
