Poland will stop Russian coal imports, freeze assets

Krakow, Poland, Mar 29 (EFE).- The Polish government Tuesday announced it will pass laws to stop importing coal from Russia and freeze assets of people and entities that support Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

“We can no longer wait for the decisions of the European Union,” the Polish government’s spokesperson, Piotr Muller, said.

A list of people and entities that will see their assets frozen will be elaborated by the interior ministry and made public in the coming days.

The government aims “to take measures that freeze various types of funds, including cash transfers, checks (…) any transactions that may benefit the Russian Federation,” he added.

Poland currently imports over half of the 21 billion cubic meters of gas it consumes a year from Russia, which also accounts for two-thirds of Warsaw’s coal imports.

During the first quarter of 2021 Poland imported 6.2 million tons of coal, four of which came from Russia. EFE
