WHO team visit Wuhan hospital where early Covid cases were treated

Wuhan, China, Jan 29 (efe-epa).- An international team of experts from the World Health Organization probing the origins of the coronavirus on Friday visited a hospital in Wuhan, China, where some of the first Covid-19 patients were admitted in December 2019, when the disease was still being treated as a “mysterious pneumonia.”

On 26 December, Doctor Zhang Jixian at Wuhan’s Xinhua hospital examined an older couple who had symptoms of fever and a cough. The following day, another patient with the same symptoms was admitted.

This patient had recently been at Wuhan’s Huanan seafood market, which is believed to have been an important motor in the early spread of the coronavirus.

Information provided by the WHO team has been few and far between. Peter Daszak, a zoologist and team member tweeted: “We are in the hospital that treated some of the first known cases of COVID-19, meeting with the actual clinicians & staff who did this work, having open discussion about the details of their work.”

The WHO scientists are due to examine patient samples taken at the hospital as well as interview early Covid-19 sufferers. They also hope to visit Huanan market, although it is uncertain when that will take place. EFE-EPA
