Gaza imposes partial lockdown amid surge in Covid-19 cases

Gaza City, Apr 6 (efe-epa).- Gaza will enter a new partial lockdown to curb a record spike in coronavirus cases, the interior ministry announced on Tuesday.

Since the United Kingdom variant of Covid-19 was first detected in Gaza last month, the infection rate has skyrocketed, with more than 1,400 new cases reported on Tuesday.

Beginning Wednesday night, vehicle traffic will be banned until Sunday, while educational institutions will be shut down until further notice.

Earlier Tuesday, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) announced the closure of the school it operates after 20 of them had to be closed due to outbreaks and attendance declined by around 70 percent.

Celebration of weddings, weekly markets and wakes in private homes will remain prohibited and the night-time curfew is to remain in place, the ministry added.

Gaza has had nearly 60,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19, which is blamed for more than 600 deaths in the region of 2 million people. Due to supply problems, fewer than 30,000 Gazans have been vaccinated. EFE-EPA lfp-sar/ta/dr
