Wijnaldum agrees to join Barcelona this summer

London, Mar 21 (efe-epa).- Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has signed a pre-contract agreement to join Barcelona when he becomes a free agent this summer.

The Dutch midfielder will become the club’s first signing under new president Joan Laporta.

He has not extended his Liverpool contract which runs out in the summer, allowing him to join Barcelona for free, The Sunday Times reported.

Barcelona’s Dutch coach Ronald Koeman reportedly asked for his countryman to join the club when he took over at the Camp Nou last summer.

The 30-year-old, who joined Liverpool in 2016 from Newcastle United, has played 40 games across all competitions with Liverpool this season.

He hoisted four titles with the English team, including the Champions League, Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

Since making his international debut in 2011, he has made 69 appearances with the Netherlands national team, scoring 21 goals.

The Rotterdam native made it through the Feyenoord youth system to the first team, having joined them from Sparta Rotterdam academy. He then moved to PSV Eindhoven in 2011, before moving to Newcastle four years later. EFE-EPA
