Nato surveillance aircraft arrive in Romania for Black Sea mission

Bucharest, Jan 17 (EFE).- Three surveillance aircraft which Nato will use during missions to monitor Russian military activity in the Black Sea region landed near Bucharest on Tuesday, the Romanian Defense Ministry said.

The AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) surveillance aircraft are part of the Atlantic Alliance’s fleet of 14 of the planes, which are usually based at the Geilenkirchen military base in Germany.

A contingent of 180 specialized military personnel is accompanying the aircraft, which landed at the Otopeni air base near Bucharest.

Over the next few weeks, they will carry out surveillance of Russian warplanes operating near airspace on the borders of Nato countries.

AWACS can detect aircraft hundreds of kilometers away.

Since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, Nato has used the aircraft in Eastern Europe and the Baltic Sea region. EFE
