British MP Sir David Amess dies after stabbing

London, Oct 15 (EFE).- British lawmaker Sir David Amess died Friday after being stabbed at his constituency office in the town of Leigh-on-Sea in southeast England.

Politicians from across the spectrum paid tribute to Amess, who served as a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party since 1983. He was 69.

Police detained the alleged aggressor following the attack at a Methodist Church where the MP was meeting with residents of his constituency of Southend West in Essex.

Amess was stabbed “multiple times” according to UK media.

Essex police were called out to the scene in Leigh-on-Sea, located to the east of London, shortly after midday.

“We attended and found a man injured. He was treated by emergency services but, sadly, died at the scene,” police said.

The statement continued: “A 25 year-old man was quickly arrested after officers arrived at the scene on suspicion of murder and a knife was recovered. He is currently in custody.

“We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”

The news sent shockwaves through the UK and echoed the death of Jo Cox, a Labour MP who was stabbed and shot to death in 2016 as she made her way to a meeting with her constituents.
