Woman Allegedly Fired Shots With AR-15 She Bought on Street for $200, Police Say

MEMPHIS, TN (FOX 13 News) — Memphis Police arrested a woman who allegedly admitted to shooting at two women with an AR-15 assault rifle.
The incident happened May 7 in the 4000 block of Gigam Drive in Westwood.
The victims were walking in the neighborhood when a woman in black gloves opened her front door and began shooting from inside, police said.
According to an affidavit, the suspect, identified as Jasmine Rice, told police she bought the high-powered weapon off the street for $200.
Rice confessed to firing four shots at the victims.
She now faces two counts of aggravated assault, records show.
The average price for an AR-15 is anywhere from $600 to $2,500, according to True Gun Value.
Sources with the Memphis Police Department told FOX13 that officers have been recovering more guns like the AR-15 from the streets in recent months.
This helps keeps those guns from being sold for discounted prices to irresponsible people with no training or background check.
Gun experts told FOX13 the price she paid for the gun is a concern that more dangerous high-powered weapons are being sold on the street.
“If you buy an AR-15 for under $400, it’s stolen, and someone is trying to get rid of it,” said certified gun instructor Bennie Cobb.
Cobb told FOX13 that selling guns on the streets is a really big problem in Memphis.
“In the last ten to twelve years, the transition has gone from handguns to the more high-velocity rifle. ARs, you hear people talking about ARs all of the time. AR-15 rifles.”
“The bullet that goes into this gun is highly penetrable. It can go through walls. It can go through car doors. So highly irresponsible for anyone to be shooting this outside.”
Cobb said the guns sold on the street are sometimes within easy reach of criminals.
“The guys on the street, they just go pick them up, and they steal them. They break into the gun store. They get them online, and so they have them on the street,” he said.
Sources with Memphis Police told FOX13 that over the last few weeks, officers have increasingly gotten stolen guns and illegal fully automatic weapons off the street.
