Ukraine ‘regains control’ of Bakhmut: Kyiv commander

Kyiv, Jul 10 (EFE).- Ukrainian military officials said their forces have regained control of the eastern city of Bakhmut, which has been the scene of intense fighting with Russian troops since last summer.

The commander of the Ukrainian ground forces said Monday that they had “regained fire control”, hours after other military officials had said they had recovered 4 sq km around the city in the past week.

“The enemy is trapped, the city is under fire control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” the head of the ground forces, Oleksandr Sirski, said on Telegram.

Sirski’s message is accompanied by a video in which the Ukrainian army is seen destroying from the air Russian targets in buildings in Bakhmut that were been identified by a Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance unit, he explained.

“Work continues” in the area, Sirski said, adding that the Russians were abandoning their positions on the outskirts of the city.

Since it began its counteroffensive about five weeks ago, Ukraine has recaptured 24 square kilometers in the vicinity of Bakhmut, as well as 130 sq km in the south of the country.

Ukraine launched its long-awaited ground counteroffensive more than a month ago with attack operations on the flanks of Bakhmut and – from the south-west of the Donetsk province and the west of Zaporizhia – toward the cities of Melitopol and Berdyansk, in the southeast from Ukraine, which are under the control of Russian forces.
